This issue has “scaling” as the focus theme. The various stories illustrate some of the various approaches that AIRCA members use to maximize the impact of our innovations.
Update from the Secretariat: At this year’s AIRCA Steering Committee Meeting, hosted by CABI at their Egham office, Directors of six AIRCA members met to discuss our achievements in the last year, as well as challenges and opportunities. One of the outcomes of the meeting was a new vision and mission statement:
Vision: Diverse climate-resilient food systems that support livelihoods, health and the environment
Mission: Strengthening innovation capacities and the evidence base for diverse, nutritious and climate-resilient food systems.
The Directors have also appointed CIMOD’s Director General Dr. David Molden as the new AIRCA Chairman, and WorldVeg’s Director General Dr Marco Wopereis as AIRCA Deputy Chair for the coming two years. The new AIRCA brochure can be downloaded from here |

| Dr Ulrich Kuhlmann, CABI's Executive Director, Global Operations, has revealed at the Annual Biocontrol Industry Meeting (ABIM) the next steps to launching CABI's innovative Biopesticides Portal to a worldwide market. The Biopesticides Portal is a free-to-use one-stop information shop for identifying and sourcing biopesticides to help in the fight against agricultural pests that threaten the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers and, ultimately, global food security. Iowa State University (ISU), through the USAID Ghana Feed the Future Agriculture Technology Transfer (ATT) project, is using drones to evaluate rice production and crop health at the Tono irrigation scheme in the Upper East Region of Ghana. Implemented by IFDC, ATT has worked with smallholder rice producers at Tono since 2014.

The programme is applying experiences and lessons learned from the hugely successful transformation of Asia and Europe’s bamboo market to East Africa, thus enabling Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda to fully participate in and benefit from the new bamboo economy of the twenty-first century. Among the project activities are national bamboo resource assessments for Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda, using the latest GIS remote sensing technology.

The Association of International Research and Development Centers for Agriculture (AIRCA) is a nine-member alliance focused on increasing food security by supporting smallholder agriculture and rural enterprise within healthy, sustainable and climate-smart landscapes.
Supported by more than 60 member countries comprising over 70% of the world's population, AIRCA members have activities in all major geographic regions and ecosystem types. All have a proven track record of research, development and implementation, working closely with farmers, extension systems, national research institutes, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector across a wide range of crops and ecosystems.
Through sharing AIRCA's knowledge and experience in creating healthy landscapes, our mission is to put research into use by strengthening capacities for sustainable improvements to incomes, food and nutrition security in healthy landscapes.
